What is the worst news a food blogger can hear?

What is the worst news a food blogger can hear? Better yet, what is the worst news a food blogger can hear in the month of December? What could it be? How about...Your kitchen is set for demolition. Oh, the horror! Now, if it was being demolished for a newer, swankier, and bigger kitchen that would be good news.  In my case, no such luck.  Imagine this...the family takes off for Thanksgiving, kids and dogs in tow, and head to the Outer Banks for our Thanksgiving tradition.  I cook such a wonderful meal.  We visit with family and friends. We relax. Best of all, I make notes, peruse recipes, make my lists all toward the best December this cookie-baking queen can dream of upon my return.

Kitchen Wall before demolition

Flashback to Saturday evening, we walk into the house and all gasp in horror at the smell.  The kitchen floor has a pool of water. The counter and everything on it is covered in water.  One wall has bubbled with paint beginning to peel.  Go downstairs to the basement, even worse.  Carpet is soaked. The walls are all bubbling with paint peeling and the smell is horrifying.

The cause...busted pipe? No. Roof leak, again no.  Toilet never screwed in properly? Ding, ding, ding, ding. Yes, it was a toilet malfunction in an upstairs bathroom. Who knows how long this had been going on!  The clean-up crew showed up yesterday and they were actually shocked.  A clean-up crew who specializes in water damage was shocked by the damage. They told us it's a Category 3.  What does that mean? I have no idea unless we're talking hurricanes. And, a category 3 hurricane...well, you know that ain't good.  Needless to say, the entire basement has been ripped apart.  The kitchen will be tomorrow.  The good news today is that we will not have to remove countertops or cabinets.  The damage was all in one area that drained down to the basement.  However, the kitchen will be closed for the rest of the week through the weekend.
Basement after demolition today

What's a blogger to do? What about my yummy cookies? What about my pretty pictures? Oh, again, the horror!  Well, this girl cried her eyes yesterday and today is looking up. Come Monday, I will be baking. I will be baking up a storm. I will send you those pictures. I will tantalize you with my sweets. They will be delayed but you will have them. I promise. I might not make as many as planned, but they are coming.  They will be packaged and they will be given as gifts. Nothing like pressure around the holidays!! It wouldn't be the same without it.

On a side note, one other positive is it's forcing me to get out of the house since these fans are unbelievably, earth-shatteringly loud.  And, since I'm out, I might as well shop for Christmas presents. Otherwise, I'd be procrastinating in my kitchen.

In the meantime, I'm sending you all a recipe for a side dish I made at Thanksgiving. Look for it in my next blog post and make it for your Christmas feast in a couple of weeks.
